It seems everyone is a videographer these days. It started when smartphones came out. Mobile video became ubiquitous and never looked back. Then came the action cam. Initially the name of the game was to find the smallest camcorder you could find, then strap it to your helmet and off you go. And then GoPro became a thing and after that, outdoor sports never looked the same. GoPro has become a household name, but the company is being dogged by poor stock market returns. Why? Competition. The thing is, there are all kinds of small action cameras that capture sharp, crisp video at a fraction of the cost as GoPro cameras. Here, in completely random order, are a few…
This 12 megapixel wifi sports camera has a new design for its waterproof case and is more easy to open and close. Full 1080P/30fps, 720P/60fps digital video recording, still photo, video display, looping record, time lapse. It has a 2.0″ color LCD screen on the back. Users say the video from this camera is bright, vibrant, and full of detail. The camera has a bunch of accessories and mounts for a variety of uses which considering the price is a good deal, giving you a great starter set with everything you really need. From one reviewer: “I actually prefer this SportShot camera over the GoPro.”
Xiaomi’s Yi action camera
This camera might look like a child’s toy, but it is far from one. Priced at about half of the cheapest GoPro, the Yi has all the features and maybe a few more (waterproofing is not one of them. A separate waterproof housing is needed). Take a look at the specs for each camera and you’ll see the Yi compares favorably with the GoPro Hero. The only problem is these babies are a little hard to get your hands on one in the states.
This tiny, full HD camera looks much like the GoPro Hero, with one glaring exception: no front LCD screen. But it still is a great little action camera for the price. Users love the ease of use and the functionality. They also like the many mounts that come in the accessory kit. The specs look good and the price is right. For a budget-minded adventurer, this might be the way to go.
Another camera that looks like a toy. But this puppy will do just about everything the GoPros do. It features full HD, waterproof to 30m, a Wi-Fi function, multiple shooting modes and formats, and webcam function.
This is a perfect camera to strap onto your quadcopter. Since it’s a whole lot cheaper than a GoPro, and since many hobby drone enthusiasts crash their quadcopters on a regular basis, you wouldn’t be too put out if you lost a RunCam. Full HD and extended battery life. It’s low power combined with quality video compression give first person view hobbyists a clear advantage. Just a great looking little camera.
