If you are a diver, then one thing is for certain: you cannot get enough. Diving is, quite simply, a way of life. It’s something that stays with you even when you are between dives. For divers, any and all time on land is simply an extended surface interval. No matter how painful, it is unavoidable that we must ascend, we must go back to terra firma, we must be responsible and pay the bills. But how do we get our underwater fix when it seems the next splash is a million years off? For those squids and frogs who are internet savvy, you have options. And some of the best options out there are SCUBA podcasts.
At the outset of planning for this article, I initially wanted to compile a comprehensive list of all the diving related podcasts in existence. However, given the proliferation of content online, that endeavor is almost impossible given my time constraints. Literally, there are dozens upon dozens of SCUBA podcasts out there, and giving each one a broad and complete review would be daunting. Instead, I have focused on what I perceive as being the longest in tenure and the most popular. Without further ado, here they are:
From its beginning in 1997, Scuba Radio has been getting positive reception from divers in Florida and all over the US. The podcast, a feed of an actual “radio show devoted to diving,” is broadcast on radio stations around the country. The professional radio program’s production value is superb. The chemistry between the host and guests does provide entertainment, but some divers complain that they rarely mention diving tips and techniques. Most of the show is spent discussing dive travel and popular dive resorts. If you are seeking exotic dive destinations and appreciate a humorous anecdote, check it out.
Christian Chew is a diver who dreamed of a career in the industry and decided to make his own path with ScubaPath. ScubaPath is a podcast all about helping people get inspired by hearing the stories of others who have made a career in the diving industry. Christian interviews his guests in a standard, easy to listen to format which allows listeners to follow their career path from start until present. As Christian says, “I may not get to dive everyday like many of our guests but I get to be immersed in the industry and meet wonderful people every day.”
The premier podcast for passionate scuba diving enthusiasts, Scuba Obsessed “interviews guests, discusses scuba diving, and geeks out about scuba dives past and future.” Recorded live each Thursday at 9:00pm EDST, the show began in 2009, when few Scuba Diving podcasts existed. To this day, though it is centralized on diving around Michigan, Scuba Obsessed is where divers gather to share their unique experiences of the sport we all cherish.
DiverSync is a podcast for scuba diving enthusiasts and anyone else interested in the underwater world. Each week, host Rich Synowiec, a Professional Scuba Educator and twenty year veteran of the dive industry, discusses diving, the industry, and all things underwater. On the show, Rich deliberates scuba topics, travel, local adventures and things going on in the diving industry.
