The forecast says it will be pushing 100 today, and your air conditioner is on the fritz. Cooling off is the only thing on your heat-weary mind, so you pile the fam into the SUV and away you go to the nearest shore. The beach is a refuge for those seeking a refreshing break from the nine to five grind, a place for fun and frivolity. It’s a place where smiles and laughter reign, and where you can relax and just enjoy yourself. Of course there are dangers. Sneaker waves and rip tides and rolling logs and, dare I say, sharks. But there are some hazards that you have never heard of, some really bizarre things that you might need to be aware of. Strange things have been going on the world’s beaches this summer, and here are some of them…
Miss Maine USA contestant catches sharks and drags them ashore with her bare hands
Taken directly from the “Why In The World?” file, here’s a story that has a lot of folks scratching their heads. Marisa Butler isn’t just another pretty face. Sure, she’s a former Miss Maine contestant, but that doesn’t mean she’s all lace and nail polish. She’s an animal lover, specifically sharks. She wants the world to look at them the same way we look at ‘cute’ seals. The real reason why she does this is to tag the sharks for future research. Science and stuff, who knew?
Australian ‘Mad Scientist’ pulls HUGE worm out of the sand…then kisses it!
So when you’re lying on the beach next time, just chillin’ in the sun, think about this—there might be a three-foot worm crawling in the sand beneath you! That’s right, a big, disgusting worm may be burrowing under your potato chips. Never fear, the Mad Scientist is here to tell you that these worms, though ominous looking, are perfectly harmless. So harmless that he’ll kiss the darn thing to prove it. The things people do for science.
WWII-era bomb detonated on Pass-a-Grille beach
Forget worms. What if you were spending a lazy day beachcombing and came across what suspiciously looked like a…BOMB! That’s what happened to beachgoers in Florida July 19, 2015. Apparently the WWII era M122 Photoflash Bomb was just sitting in the surf when someone taking a casual stroll found it. Bomb crews were called in as the beach was evacuated. Surprisingly, the bomb (a photoflash bomb) was still active and had to be detonated. As one person said, you just never know what you’ll find at the beach.
Woman hurt in mystery beach explosion
It was a beautiful family day at the beach for Kathleen Danise. While chatting with her two sisters, her niece built a sandcastle. Then, the next thing she knew, the sand beneath her erupted. Her chair began to sink like it was in quicksand, and then she was catapulted several feet into the air, landing hard on a rock jetty. What happened? It was clearly a detonation, yet no evidence of any type of explosive device was found. Authorities scratched their heads and searched for a cause. A defunct power line was exhumed yet that was ruled out. Other causes like seismic events and natural gas accidents have also been eliminated. Even theories like fermenting seaweed have been proffered, yet to date no one knows exactly what happened.
